Your innovative photography techniques and pink hues instantly attracted me to your work. Can you please explain your beliefs about femininity and why you chose pink to represent your recent work?
Despite the fact that I personally like it, pink is a colour which is socially attributed to the female sex and I enjoy investigating ideas related to gender stereotypes. In the “Avatar” collection, for instance, I was questioning why certain stereotypes exist without being questioned. Why is pink a colour associated with the female gender? It’s a “fun” way to point out the tip from a much bigger iceberg. I think my idea of femininity is quite broad. Nowadays, a woman can do basically anything she wants to do.
Your work pushes the limits of fashion and has a very avant-garde vibe. You typically use “unconventional” people as your subject matter. What inspires you to choose your subjects?
When I am casting for my personal projects, I generally prefer working with “normal” subjects. I like to make sure I have a great variety of beauties represented in my images. I think as a female artist, I have the responsibility to avoid perpetuating certain beauty standards and myths. By making sure my casting is diverse, I would like to think that I am doing my part on representing women on a positive way.
What inspires you to create? Can you describe your typical creative process?
The inspiration can come from anything, sometimes I brainstorm for days by myself and suddenly it clicks. I generally like to start a project with theoretical research. Moving forward, I will search for visual references related to my concept. Finally, I try to put some ideas on paper, but unfortunately, I am not really good at drawing. At this stage, I will develop composition, colour palette, set design and so on.
What is next for you? Do you have any upcoming shows or projects you are looking forward to?
I exhibited a new project at The Other Art Fair recently. Also, I am working on a new commission for a gallery in Amsterdam, which I am really excited about.
